Born
in Jack's Reef N.Y. on the Seneca River in 1951 and moving to Florida's west
coast when he was five years old has always kept Steve Shuba close to the
water's edge. "I quess it's only natural to be so totally enthralled with
the marine environment. Have been a serious fisherman since I was big enough to
hold a fishing pole, and a diver since the first time I opened my eyes
underwater, but much more than that, I've always been an acute observer of my
surroundings and the wildlife in it."
"Imaginations are a wonderful thing, we all have
it, but we all don't exercise it to the same extent. My imagination never stops
- I won't let it, it's too much fun to play with. When is the last time you
looked at the clouds? I mean really looked at them, like when we were younger,
it's still fun you know."
"My Driftwood and Moose Antler Sculptures are the same kind
of fun. They are always shaped differently, no two are ever the same: like
fingerprints and snowflakes. Turning the shapes around and over until they
actually tell you what they will be, that's a good feeling. But now the work
begins."

Steve is a
self-taught sculptor and airbrush painter, even formulating and enhancing the
lacquer based paints with finely ground fish scales for iridescence,
brilliance, and translucency in his colors like you've never seen before. Steve
collects the driftwood from both fresh and salt water, from Florida to Maine.
The animals naturally shed the Antlers that Steve uses in his Sculptures every
spring, so no animals have been taken to create these
Sculptures.
"
Carving in wood gives me such a great feeling knowing that what I am doing is
actually one of the oldest of all art forms. Using tools makes me a tool user
which is what we humans have always been, I will use many different types of
tools to get the work completed, both power and hand tools. Each and every time
I finish a Sculpture surrounded by my tools I get the fulfillment of knowing
that I too have become a 'tool user'." ~ Steve Shuba ~ |
| The works below are carved from pieces of red cedar roots that
Mother Nature has bent and shaped - giving it such incredible character along
with the beautiful natural wood grains - then finished with a hi-gloss urethane
and Moose Antlers that are naturally shed. The Antlers that Steve uses in his
Sculptures are found every spring, so no animals have been taken to create
these Sculptures. Colors used are specially formulated air brushed lacquers
using finely ground fish scales for iridescent pigmentation which also gives
them a beautiful transparency so the beauty shows through. |
