Watercolor
captured her heart after she and her husband retired from the business world
and purchased a beach home in Florida. In the span of eight years she has
presented four, one-person art exhibits. She has been juried into Watercolor
U.S.A., a national watercolor competition, for two consecutive years. She has
won several "people's choice" awards and was recently awarded first place in
the "Arts and Design Society of Fort Walton Beach, Florida" annual art
competition. |
She has studios in her beach cottage
in Florida and at her summer home in the foothills of the Missouri Ozarks.
Gretchen is a member of the Polk County Artists Association and the Missouri
Watercolor Society. For the past six years, she has been the facilitator for an
annual watercolor workshop taught by Florida artists, Robert and Sharon Long.
Her work is in galleries and private collections internationally. Gretchen
paints in a realistic style of subjects mainly from nature including birds,
botanicals and landscapes. Her style is her own, with influence and inspiration
from many artists, instructors, friends and family.

"As long as I can remember, I have incorporated my love of art in everything I
have done. It has been my great escape, transporting me to another place,
making the ordinary into something special. Whether it was including
illustrations in a school assignment, designing clothes for our three
daughters, making our home a beautiful, well balanced and peaceful place,
gardening or observing the world around me.
When I discovered the world
of watercolor, I was able to express my love of beauty, and design in God's
magnificent creation in a magical way. When I create a painting, it is as if
something from within me is born. It is a gift, which fills me with awe and
unspeakable pleasure. It lifts me up.
To create a painting of worth, I
need to be with it from the beginning and the subject must be something I truly
love. It must be mine from the inception . . . something in nature or objects,
which I have seen, experienced and loved.
The gift of painting, not
only gives me joy and peace, but the thrill of bringing happiness to those who
view my art. The fact that my artwork will be a part of someone's home . . .
part of their surroundings . . . part of their lives, is awe inspiring, and
humbling." |
